You are driving home when you receive an alert from your printer to pick up some ink, since it is running out. While picking up the printer ink, you receive an alert from your refrigerator to pick up some eggs, because it is on sale at the store across the street and you will need it for breakfast next morning. It could be achieved by the application of the Internet of things (IoT) which is a new revolution of the Internet and makes our life better and easier.
The Internet of Things is a computing concept that describes a future where everyday physical objects will be connected to the Internet and be able to identify themselves to other devices. In other words, more objects are becoming embedded with sensors and make themselves recognizable and gaining the intelligence ability to communicate information about themselves as well as the ability to access information that has been aggregated by other things. With the Internet of Things, the physical world is becoming one big information system. The IoT is promising to create new business models, improve business processes, and reduce costs and risks.
Now our computers, tablets and smart phones are being connected to the Internet with the development of telecommunication technologies. The IoT shows a world where just about anything can be connected and communicates in an intelligent fashion. However, with more things connected to Internet, there will be increasing demand for more network traffic, especially higher capacity in core networks. In addition, the shaping of IoT is largely depending on technologies like Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6), cloud computing, Internet everywhere, and sensors. Most of these technologies are also asking for high capacity network traffic. In the end, it’s all about bandwidth and using technologies and products that can achieve higher network traffic capacity.
The network supported by fiber optic cable is the best solution to this problem with significant advantages:
- Speed & High Bandwidth—the signals of transmitted on fiber optics runs at the speed of light which cannot be achieved by other medium currently. Fiber optics also allow much longer transmission distances and high signal rates than any other medium. Fiber optics network removes one big obstacle on the way to IoT.
- Security—Fiber optic network is the most secure network. It would be quite possible to attach to a copper line in order to hack into the system. However, as the fiber optic is made out of glass, and the only way to hack into the system is to break it, which would cause the whole system to go down and alert you that you have been hacked. With most things connected to the Internet, security would be an important thing to consider in the reality of IoT, and fiber optic can support the demands.
- NO Electromagnetic Interference—If and when the fiber optic cables need to be run in close or nearby proximity to electrical machinery (especially ones with high-frequency noises), fiber connectivity allows the control signals to be carried without error or interference, making fiber a number one choice for IoT’s network.
With more devices connected to the Internet which leads to the increasing demand for high bandwidth and internet speed, now many places are moving to fiber optics. According to an authority research, in 2013 and estimated 10 billion devices were connected to the Internet. This number will likely reach 50 billion or more by 2020. What is predictable is that, as fiber optics pave the way to Internet of Things, the Internet of things will drive a massive build-out of supporting optical infrastructure.
