Intel to Demonstrate Optical Fiber Data Transmission Technology

Posted on by FS.COM

Intel is the initial deployment of optical fiber, optical fiber will use laser and light faster mobile data computer, most computers use to replace the current old and slow wire technology.

ThIntel’s silicon photonics technology will be applied in the motherboard and rack levels and the use of light to the data between the transmission and storage, network and computing resources.  The optical fiber that is much faster than copper cable transmission.

Open Computing Summit, said Justin Rattner, Intel’s chief technology officer, silicon photonics technology will become part of a new generation of servers, these servers will require a faster network, storage and processing subsystems.

At the conference, Intel and server maker Quanta Computer shows a prototype server rack architecture using fiber module mobile data to the server using the Intel chip, and support the chip manufacturer’s Xeon provessor and Atom server chip.

Rattner said that this was more than a decade of research results of Inter Labs, silicon photonics technology to achieve 100G bps transmission speed, and use less electricity, the technology can integrate the data center’s power supply and fan, low component costs.

Intel’s research concentrates on the production equipment in the rack-level delopyment of silicon photonics, including modulators and detectors. Currently, the company is the production of silicon photonics module 100G bps transmission speed and provides it to some customers tested.

Rattner said that silicon photonics may re-define the server design. With high-speed bandwidth, processing and storage unit from the server decoupling stored in separate units. In silicon photonics deployment server design will be a bigger change.

Intel is working with Facebook to cooperate to define a new server technology, the new technology will lead to the decoupling of the computing, networking and storage resources. Silicon photonics provide high-bandwidth connections will be key to achieve this rack technology, processors, swithes, and other optical modules need to be integrated to power management, protocol support, and load balancing. In order to achieve the high-speed data transmission.

Intel has its Thunderbolt connector technology using optical fiber. And Intel is actively promoting the silicon photonics technology to the data center, which may be less than five years will be achieved.

Intel said it will deploy InfiniBand network chip technology to achieve faster data transmission.

Optical fiber to replace copper cable is just a matter of time, said Dean McCarron, principal analyst at Mercury Research.

The initial deployment may be very expensive, and may need to introduce high-speed data transmission protocol, but eventually the speed will surprise you. McCarron said: “The signal will become more and more complex, we will have to transfer to the photon technology.”
