In the last decades, Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) transmission systems achieve a higher transmission capacity over greater distances which satisfy the demands of higher transmission to a certain extent. In addition, to achieve longer transmission distances, as an important technology, optical amplifier is widely used by people in optical communication networks. Compared to the repeaters, optical amplifiers do not need to convert the signal to an electrical signal first, thus cost efficiency has led to repeaters being largely replaced in long-haul systems by optical amplifiers since one amplifier can be used for many wavelengths in a Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) system. Nowadays, several types of optical amplifiers can be used in a DWDM transmission system, including Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers (SOA), Doped fiber optical amplifiers (DFA) and Raman amplifiers (RA).

Review

Booster Amplifier
DWDM-EDFA-BA Series are booster amplifiers which operate at the transmission side of the link. It features high input power, high output power, and medium optical gain. Boosters are designed to amplify aggregated optical input power for reach extension. Software control is standard via an RS-232 interface for status monitoring and pump current adjustments.

In-line Amplifier
DWDM-EDFA-LA Series are in-line amplifiers that operate in the middle of an optical link. It features medium to low input power, high output power, high optical gain, and a low noise figure. In-line amplifiers are designed for optical amplification between two network nodes on the main optical link. Software control is standard via an RS-232 interface for status monitoring and pump current adjustments.

DWDM-EDFA-PA Series are pre-amplifiers that operate at the receiving end of an optical link. It features medium to low input power, medium output power, and medium gain. Preamplifiers are designed for optical amplification to compensate for losses in a demultiplexer located near the optical receiver. Software control is standard via an RS-232 interface for status monitoring and pump current adjustments.

Raman Amplifier
Raman amplifier has a wide gain spectrum, the gain bandwidth can be further broadened by the use of multi-wavelength optical pump. Fiberstore FS-1550 Series Raman amplifiers are suitable for the ultra-long haul optical fiber CATV transmission.
