Six Types Of Quad Small Form-Factor Pluggable Plus Cable – QSFP+ Cables

QSFP+(Quad Small Form-Factor Pluggable Plus) cables, including QSFP+ copper direct attach copper cable (DAC) and QSFP+ active optical cable (AOC), are considered as the more cost-effective solutions of interconnection between 40G devices. And they offer a wide variety of high-density and low-power 40 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity options for data center, high-performance computing networks, enterprise core and distribution layers, and service provider applications. Nowadays in the market, there are mainly six types of 40G QSFP+ cables such as 40G QSFP+ to QSFP+ DAC and 40G QSFP+ to QSFP+ AOC. This post will give a detailed introduction to these six types of QSFP+ cables.


QSFP+ copper DACs are designed for high-density interconnect applications. These cables are suitable for in-rack connections between servers and Top-of-Rack (ToR) switches. In addition, they provide state-of-the-art performance, helping IT organizations achieve new levels of infrastructure consolidation while expanding application and service capabilities.

The 40G QSFP+ to QSFP+ DAC has two high-density QSFP+ connectors. And they are suitable for very short distances and offer a very cost-effective way to establish a 40-gigabit links. Generally, this type of twinax cable that is short than 5 meters are passive and those longer than 5 meters are active, but this may vary from vendor to vendor.

40G QSFP+ to 4xSFP+ DAC

This QSFP+ DAC is a little different from the former one. It has one 40Gbps QSFP+ connector and four 10Gbps SFP+ connectors. With this structure, this cable can connect a 40G QSFP port of a switch on one end to four 10G SFP+ ports of a switch on the other end, which allows a 40G Ethernet port to be used as four independent 10G ports. Thus providing increased density while permitting backward compatibility and a phased upgrade of equipment.

The QSFP+ to 4 XFP direct attach cable is not commonly seen as the former two types. It is a 40GBase QSFP+ hybrid passive cable with a QSFP+ connector at one end and 4 XFP connectors at the other. It’s an application for link with QSFP+ port on 40Gbps rate switch or host and feed up to 4 upstream 10Gbps switch or host.



Different from copper DACs, 40G QSFP+ AOCs are much thinner and lighter than copper cables, which makes cabling easier. Active optical cables enable efficient system airflow and have no EMI issues, which is critical in high-density racks.

40G QSFP+ to QSFP+ AOC is a high-performance and low-cost integrated cable for 40G short-range multi-lane communication and interconnect applications. With the QSFP+ connector, the AOC can offer 4 independent data transmission channels and 4 data receiving channels, each capable of 10Gbps operation, achieving an aggregate transmission data rate of 40Gbps over up to 100ms.

As its name shows, this 40G QSFP+ to 4xSFP+ breakout cable contains a 40G QSFP+ connector on one end and four separate 10G SFP+ connectors at the other ends. It is intended for 40G to 4x10G applications and offers network operators a cost-effective interconnect solution for merging 40G QSFP and 10G SFP+ enabled host adapters, switches and servers.

40G QSFP+ to 4 x 10G SFP+ Breakout Active Optical Cable

The QSFP+ to 8xLC cable provides 4 fully duplex channels per cable supporting signal transmission rates up to 10 Gb/s. It provides connectivity between devices using QSFP+ port on one end and 8xLC connectors on the other end. This type of cable is also suitable for short distance transmissions.
