Definition Differences

The Optical Network Unit (ONU) is a device located on the user side in a fiber optic access network, and there may be other networks between it and the end-user. Its main function includes converting optical signals from the Optical Distribution Network (ODN) into electrical signals, and further processing these signals to provide various services to end-users, such as internet, telephone, and IPTV.

On the other hand, Optical Network Terminal is directly applied to end-users, connecting directly to devices in the user's home or office environment through an optical network interface. In Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) applications, ONT often refers to the "optical modem" installed in the user's home, handling optical-to-electrical signal conversion and offering multiple interfaces for connecting terminal devices like computers, telephones, and TV set-top boxes.

Application Scenarios and Locations

In FTTH scenarios, the concepts of ONU and ONT may sometimes merge. This is because fiber optics can directly reach users' homes, meaning the Optical Modem is connected to both the branched fiber from the ODN and directly to the end-user. In this situation, the functionality of the ONU is integrated into the ONT device, essentially combining them into a unified entity.
