Its main function includes converting optical signals from the Optical Distribution Network (ODN) into electrical signals, and further processing these signals to provide various services to end-users, such as internet, telephone, and IPTV.

On the other hand, Optical Network Terminal is directly applied to end-users, connecting directly to devices in the user's home or office environment through an optical network interface. In Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) applications, ONT often refers to the "optical modem" installed in the user's home, handling optical-to-electrical signal conversion and offering multiple interfaces for connecting terminal devices like computers, telephones, and TV set-top boxes.

In FTTH scenarios, the concepts of ONU and ONT may sometimes merge. In this situation, the functionality of the ONU is integrated into the ONT device, essentially combining them into a unified entity.

In Fiber-to-the-Building (FTTB) or other structurally complex network layouts, ONU may be placed in the building's equipment room or hallway, aggregating information from multiple users, while ONT is located in each user's home or office, serving as the final link for personal network access.

ONU primarily operates at the network level, responsible for optical signal conversion and service processing between the access and aggregation layers. ONT, on the other hand, focuses more on the user access level, directly interacting with user applications.
