The enterprise campus network has evolved over the last 20 years to become a primary element in business computing and communication infrastructure. The Cisco Catalyst 4500-X series is an intriguing new solution as an aggregation switch for campus LANs that want to bring in 10GbE uplinks without the cost or complexity of a chassis based switch. It delivers best-in-class scalability, simplified network virtualization, and integrated network services for space-constrained environments in campus networks which meets the business growth objectives with unprecedented scalability. This article provides basic knowledge and optics solutions for 4500-X series switch that will allow you to easily deployment this series switch in your network.

Overview of Cisco 4500-X Series Switch

Catalyst 4500-X series switch is a 1RU unit that provides either 16 or 32 10GBASE-X (SFP+) or 1000BASE-X (SFP) ports. An additional 8 ports of 1000BASE-X (SFP) or 10GBASE-X (SFP+) are available in a removable Ethernet uplink module that mounts in a bay on the front of the switch chassis, and the uplink module is hot swappable. The SFP+ interface supports both 10 Gigabit Ethernet and 1 Gigabit Ethernet ports, allowing customers to use their investment in 1 Gigabit Ethernet SFP and upgrade to 10 Gigabit Ethernet SFP+ when business demands change, without having to do a comprehensive upgrade of the existing deployment.

VSS on Cisco 4500-X Series Switch

The most prominent feature for 4500-X series switch may be built-in VSS (Virtual Switch System) support. VSS is a method to combine two physical switches into one logical switch to achieve physical redundancy, Spanning-Tree blocking elimination, and increased bandwidth. Any two Cisco Catalyst 4500-X series switches can be pooled together into a VSS (shown in the figure below). Once a VSS is created, it acts as a single virtual Cisco Catalyst switch which simplifies configuration while providing a higher level of availability. Besides, the 4500-X series switch may therefore provide up to 80 ports of 10 Gigabit Ethernet per system and scale system bandwidth capacity to 1.6 Tbps.

VSS on Cisco 4500-X Series Switch

In a Cisco 4500X VSS, the data plane of both clustered switches is active at the same time in both chassis. VSS members are connected by virtual switch links (VSLs) using standard Gigabit or 10 Gigabit Ethernet connections between the VSS members. The VSL serves as logical connection that carries critical system control information such as hot-standby supervisor programming, line card status, Distributed Forwarding Card (DFC) programming, system management, diagnostics, and more. In addition, VSL is also capable of carrying user data traffic when necessary.

Optics Solutions for Cisco 4500-X Series Switch

The network interface ports on the Catalyst 4500-X switch front panel require either an SFP or an SFP+ transceiver to operate. However, not all SFP or SFP+ transceivers might be supported by the Catalyst 4500-X switch. Additionally, when you use the SFP-10GZR-55 SFP+ transceiver on the Catalyst 4500-X series switch, there are some restrictions as the followings.

For Catalyst 4500-X switch chassis operating with front-to-back airflow, the SFP-10GZR-55 transceiver is supported on ports 1 through 32 (part no. WS-C4500X-32SFP+) or on ports 1 through 16 (part no. WS-C4500X-16SFP+).
For Catalyst 4500-X switch chassis operating with back-to-front airflow, the SFP-10GZR-55 transceiver is not supported on ports 1 through 32 (part no. WS-C4500X-F-32SFP+) or on ports 1 through 16 (part no. WS-C4500X-F-16SFP+).
The SFP-10GZR-55 transceiver is supported on ports 1 through 8 on the optional network uplink module (part no. C4KX-NM-8SFP+) irrespective of the chassis airflow direction.
