Today's consumers carry smartphones, laptops and tablets with them wherever they go, whether for work or leisure. They expect instant access to high-speed Internet and Internet-enabled applications so they can check e-mail, access work files, upload photos, participate in social media sites, watch movies or listen to music. As more than 90 percent of today's travelers stress the importance of hotel Wi-Fi, guests expect the highest bandwidth and most robust and secure Wi-Fi possible. However, hotels and hoteliers are still struggling to provide a rewarding Internet experience. Unlike in the past, Wi-Fi in hotels has become a necessity. Hoteliers must view Wi-Fi as a platform through which guests can be connected.

4 Common Problems in Hotel Wi-Fi

Slow Wi-Fi Experience

Wireless for star hotel guests plays a very important role in the day-to-day operation of the service. From the moment guests arrive at the hotel and wait for check-in, it has become a habit to access the hotel's wireless network. Customers hope to enjoy the convenience of the Internet through high-quality WiFi access, but the gap between the ideal and the reality means that customers often fail to enjoy the convenience of in-store WiFi. Unpleasant access experiences such as "sometimes strong and sometimes weak wireless signal"; "intermittent wireless access"; "web pages that cannot be opened and online videos that are always buffered" made many guests eventually helpless. In the end, many guests had no choice but to choose the operator's 3G/4G as their access carrier.

Access point errors

The number and placement of access points (APs) can create or break hotel Wi-Fi. Molti hotel potrebbero voler ridurre il numero di AP installati, perché possono essere costosi. But this can mean very poor Wi-Fi for guests. The latter will experience gaps in coverage throughout the hotel, losing service as they move through spaces. Network managers should conduct a site survey that takes into account the number of APs needed to adequately cover all areas of the hotel, as well as factors such as physical and material barriers to signals. They should identify where many people will use devices at the same time, such as the lobby, and plan for additional access points as needed. Some hotels decide to deploy APs in each room to ensure optimal connectivity for guests, instead of placing them only in the hallways.

Lots of interference

Guests may find themselves with hotel Wi-Fi dropping or interrupting due to interference. Interference occurs when other Wi-Fi signals are present and struggling for connectivity. Also, when channels are occupied by too many users, service drops or slow connections occur. The 2.4 GHz band is quite congested because it is used by all kinds of smart devices in hotels, such as Bluetooth devices, smartphones, and even microwaves. Sometimes a simple switch to 5 GHz is enough to increase guest access to better Wi-Fi. Enabling band steering technology can also help, since the wireless AP (and not client devices) will choose the band to connect to (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz) based on what the device can support. This means that devices that can connect at 5 GHz will do so automatically, freeing up more space on the 2.4 GHz band.

Low efficiency of O&M management

Hotel information system O&M staff must take care of the O&M of the entire information system, from network equipment, servers, application systems, databases, etc. Many systems and few staff have become a serious problem in hotel operation and maintenance. When the information system breaks down and is reported for repair, hotel management is in a state of chaos due to complaints from internal employees and guests, or multiple breakdowns at the same time. In troubleshooting, the source of the failure cannot be found; the configuration change cannot be traced; and there is no practical experience and reference to the solution for the solution, resulting in the failure of the information system in a complex environment to be repaired in time.

Basic Needs of the Hospitality WiFi Network

Wireless platform with high speed, good signal and excellent guest experience - In the era of mobile Internet, wireless has become the "physiological demand" of people, and the wireless experience of hotel guests directly affects the evaluation of hotel stay. Therefore, the requirements for building the hotel network include a wireless platform that covers the hotel lobby, dining, conference, leisure and entertainment, and guest rooms. The platform must have high-quality signal coverage, high speed, and stable access experience.

Comprehensive, intelligent and quick-response O&M management system - The perfection or otherwise of the O&M system plays a decisive role in the day-to-day operation of the hotel network platform. At present, hotel chains in particular operate a number of hotels, spread across different areas, and invest more in staffing and management of O&M. Therefore, a comprehensive, intelligent, and quick-response O&M platform can improve the daily management of the hotel and reduce the investment in O&M costs through an intelligent operation and maintenance system.

WiFi Solution for Hospitality FS and Highlights

What kind of solution can meet the needs of a hotel's WiFi network? Here we provide a complete solution including network topology, features and product parameters.

Hospitality WiFi Solution

Suggestions for deploying this network topology:

  • Hotel room: In every room, an FS AP-N515H is installed on the wall near the TV or on the desk wall without shelter. This AP panel supports dual radio, is easy to install, simple and beautiful, and meets the network needs of the guest room.

  • Guest room corridor: The AP-N505 is installed on the ceiling and the distribution distance is 15-20 meters to meet the corridor network coverage.

  • Hotel lobby and hotel restaurant: APs are placed at equal intervals horizontally and vertically, with an interval of about 30 meters. They are installed on the ceiling FS AP-N515 and the installation height is controlled at 3-5 meters from the ground. The points are evenly distributed. A single AP supports the access of 80 terminals.

  • High-density conference room: APs are placed at equal intervals horizontally and vertically, with an interval of about 12-15m. Ceiling installation of AP-N635 Wi-Fi 6E (coming soon) was adopted, and the installation height is controlled at 3-5m above the ground. A single AP supports the access of 150 terminals.

  • Hotel office area: The hotel office area is relatively small and the AP-N505 can meet the needs. It is installed on the ceiling and the recommended distance is 15-20 meters to achieve full coverage of Wi-Fi signals.

  • Outdoor hotel and lawn: Install one FS AP-T567 on the wall every 15 m or on a light pole at a considerable distance. The directional AP covers a maximum distance of 150 meters. According to the requirements of the installation environment, by adjusting the tilt angle of the equipment, the orientation is toward the main outdoor activity area.

What are the highlights of this solution?

    • "Scenario-based" wireless deployment reduces costs and ensures comprehensive WiFi coverage

The hotel lobby, catering, conference center, fitness and entertainment center, guest rooms, and wireless distribution based on external scenarios, through "ubiquitous signals," "stable access without line drop," and "high-speed WIFI experience," make guests happy The experience of every scene in the hotel.

By connecting to the Airware unified cloud management platform, the efficiency of operation and maintenance is improved, and operation and maintenance visualization realizes intelligent network optimization and expert-level troubleshooting. It also realizes batch processing, remote control, and other functions.

    • Convenient authentication method, convenient for users to experience the Internet

From the moment guests arrive at the hotel, they can start browsing the Internet through the portal's convenient authentication method, and the hotel can also customize the authentication page to meet marketing needs.
