What is Video Streaming?

Video streaming is a technology that transmits multimedia content such as audio and video in real time over the Internet. Unlike traditional downloading methods, users can start playing content without waiting for the entire file to be downloaded. This greatly improves the convenience and speed of content consumption. Video streaming technology allows users to access and play multimedia content at any time and any place through various devices (such as computers, smartphones, tablets, etc.).

Main features of streaming media:

  • 1. Instant playback: Users can start watching or listening to content without waiting for the entire file to be downloaded.

  • 2. Data segment transmission: Multimedia content is divided into small segments, transmitted and played step by step to ensure smoothness.

  • 3. Flexible access: Supports multiple devices and platforms, and users can access content anywhere with an Internet connection.

  • 4. Efficient transmission: Use advanced compression and transmission technology to optimize network bandwidth utilization and improve playback experience.

How Does Video Streaming Work?

The operation of streaming technology relies on the client-server model. In this model, the server stores and sends multimedia content, and the client (user device) connects to the server through the Internet to receive and play the data stream.

  • Server: The streaming server is responsible for storing multimedia content and transmitting the content in segments to the client according to the user's request. The server usually has high bandwidth and powerful processing power to support simultaneous access by a large number of users.

  • Client: The client device establishes a connection with the server through the network, receives and decodes the data stream for playback. The client software (such as media players, browser plug-ins, etc.) is responsible for processing this data so that users can watch or listen to the content smoothly.

Streaming transmission usually uses special transmission protocols (such as RTMP, HTTP Live Streaming, etc.), which divide the multimedia content into small segments for transmission. In this way, when the user starts playing video or audio, the client will continuously request and receive subsequent data segments from the server to maintain continuous playback. This segmented transmission and buffering mechanism can ensure the smoothness of content even if network conditions fluctuate.

What Can Cause Streaming to Slow Down?

Streaming technology provides users with instant access to video and audio content, but slow playback or freezing problems often occur during use. Here are some common causes:

  • Network latency and packet loss

  • Network congestion

  • Insufficient network bandwidth

  • Problems with home routers and other network devices

  • Excessive server load

So, What Can Help Speed Up Streaming?

Upgrade Broadband: Increase your internet bandwidth. Choose a higher-speed internet package that provides more bandwidth to support streaming.

Use Wired Connection: Use a wired connection (such as an Ethernet cable) instead of Wi-Fi because wired connections are usually more stable and faster.

Clean Up Device Storage: Clean cache files and unnecessary data on your device to ensure there is enough storage space and memory to run streaming apps.

Use CDN Services: Streaming services often rely on CDNs to distribute content closer to users to reduce latency. Choose a streaming platform that provides high-quality CDN services.

FS Video Streaming Networking Solution

FS integrates advanced switches, PicOS®, and AmpCon™ management platform to design a modern data center architecture for 4K/8K video service providers. It enables efficient network management, enhanced capacity and reliability, and reduced overall Opex.

FS Video Streaming Networking Solution

Explore the Benefits of FS Video Streaming Network

Unified OS and Management: Switches run on the unified PicOS® with a consistent CLI and are managed via the AmpCon™ platform for remote and zero-touch configuration, allowing for simplified and centralized set-up.

Scalable Spine-Leaf Architecture: Spine-Leaf allows simply adding leaf or spine nodes for business growth. Every leaf switch connects via the shortest path to multiple spines, minimizing latency and increasing redundancy.

Scalable Spine-Leaf Architecture: Flexible VXLAN Network: VXLAN technology constructs a virtual Layer 2 network and creates virtual tunnels, enabling VM live migrations both within and across data centers with zero downtime and flexible resource allocation.

Node-Level Redundancy with MLAG: MLAG enhances redundancy and bandwidth through link aggregation, mitigating the risk of single point of failure while ensuring consistent stability, and reducing congestion.

Partition Design: The network partition design (business, storage and out-of-band management) helps isolate different business areas and reduce traffic complexity.

Field Technical Support: FS local service teams offer a full-spectrum technical service and deliver professional end-to-end solutions, from design, assessment to deployment.
