Optics and Cables for Arista 7280E Network Design

Today’s cloud data applications, such as Big Data, are distributed applications running on server clusters with many-to-many communication patterns. The performance of distributed Big Data applications depends critically on the packet buffer size of the data center switches in the network fabric. There are two types of switch chips commonly used in data center switches. One uses on-chip shared SRAM (Static Random Access Memory) buffers, while the other uses external DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) buffer. This article will introduce the large buffer switches—Arista 7280E series switches.

Arista 7280E Series Switches Overview

The Arista 7280E series switches are key components of the Arista 7000 series portfolio of data center switches. The 7280E are a series of purpose built fixed configuration 1RU form factor switches designed with deep buffers, virtual output queues, rich features and support for 10/40/100G ports. The capabilities of 7280E address the requirements for modern networking and rich multi-media content delivery requiring a lossless forwarding solution. The Arista 7280E series switches are available in three models each with 48 SFP+ ports for 1/10G and a choice of 40G and 100G uplinks.


This model has 48 ports of SFP+, allowing the full range of SFP/SFP+ optics for 100M/1G/10G connectivity. It also has 2 MXP ports, where each MXP port can deliver a choice of 1x100G (SR10), 3X40G (SR4), or 12x10G (SR) using breakout cables. The total forwarding capacity is up to 72x10G.



This model has 48 ports of SFP+, allowing the full range of SFP/SFP+ optics for 100M/1G/10G connectivity. It also has 2 QSFP100 (QSFP28) ports available. These ports each enable a choice 1x100G with QSFP100 optics, 1x40G QSFP+, or 4x10G QSFP+ when broken out using a splitter cable. The total switching capacity is 48x10G + 2x100G, so the system is named 7280SE-68.



This model has 48 ports of SFP+, allowing the full range of SFP/SFP+ optics for 100M/1G/10G connectivity. It also has 4 ports of QSFP+ that can be split out into 4x10G or combined to be a single 40G Ethernet capable port. This provides a total forwarding capacity of 64x10G.


Optics and Cables Used in Arista 7280E Series Switches

The SFP+ ports accommodate a full range of 10G SFP+ and 1G SFP transceivers and cables to provide support for a wide range of connectivity options from short reach copper and multimode fiber to longer reaches over single-mode fiber up to 40 km and DWDM solutions up to 80 km. The SFP options include multimode and single-mode fiber transceivers, and both 100M and 1G over copper cabling.

QSFP+ ports enable a wide range of copper, multimode and single-mode optics with both 10G and 40G options using both duplex and parallel technology that reach up to 40 km.

QSFP100 ports enable a wide range of standards based 100G and 40G optics for both single-mode and multimode fiber for distances up to 40 km. Each interface can be configured independently for either 40G or 100G, or a 4x10G mode using breakout cables or optics.

The MXP ports support a mix and match option of 12x10G, 3X40G or 1x100G per port. With support for up to 400 m over multimode fiber, MXP ports provide high-density and seamless migration from 10G to 100G without replacing transceivers or lowering system capacity.

Network Designs for Arista 7280E Series Switches

All models in the Arista 7280E series deliver rich layer 2 and layer 3 features with wire speed performance up to 1.44 Terabits per second.
