In the highly competitive hotel industry, improving service quality and creating unique features have become essential goals for every hotel operator. As mobile networks and smart devices become more common, the hotel sector is moving towards an era of digitalization and intelligence. Providing guests with easy internet access and a more comfortable stay is now a key standard for measuring hotel service quality.

This article examines the challenges traditional hotel networks face and explores how FS's POL (Passive Optical LAN) solution effectively addresses these issues, helping hotels enhance the guest experience.

Challenges in Hotel Traditional Networks

Traditional hotel networks come with many challenges that complicate day-to-day operations and long-term planning.

  • Complex Wiring Infrastructure: Traditional hotel networks often use a "one room, multiple cables" setup. They use separate cables for services like the internet, telephone, and TV. This setup initially requires a lot of time and resources to install and organize the cables. It also makes future maintenance more complicated.

  • High Equipment Costs: Traditional networks depend a lot on wired connections. This means investing heavily in physical gear like routers, switches, and lots of cables. These parts are expensive and need regular updates and replacements, which adds to ongoing costs.

  • Limited Scalability: The traditional multi-line architecture isn't flexible enough to meet new business demands. Upgrading the network usually means making big changes to the existing setup, which leads to inefficiency and makes scaling hard.

  • Security Issues: Traditional hotel networks usually have several separate systems for phone, internet, surveillance, and TV. Each system operates on separate cables and equipment. However, there's no unified security management between these systems, which creates potential vulnerabilities. Many hotels also still use unencrypted network protocols for data transmission. This means that both guest and hotel information can be easily intercepted or listened to, especially when using public Wi-Fi.

Overview of the FS POL Solution: Embrace the Future of Smart Hotels

As smart hotels become more widespread, upgrading internal hotel networks has become crucial for better service quality and expanding business operations. To tackle the challenges hotels face with their networks, FS has introduced the POL all-optical solution.

POL is a new type of local area network based on PON (Passive Optical Network) technology. It improves the wiring and structure of the network, making it simpler and more efficient. In addition, it offers advantages like high bandwidth, high reliability, and easy deployment and management.

FS all-optical hotel solution is P2MP-based, which takes OLT as a core, using multi-level splitting, and working with various ONUs to achieve fiber to the rooms, corridors and other spaces. One fiber transports telephone, PC, IPTV and Wi-Fi services at the same time, which offers high-quality network experience in hotels.

Key Equipment Support FS POL Solutions

High-Density OLT Device

An 8-port and 16-port GPON OLT is used to replace traditional aggregation switches in the network, supporting uplink speeds of up to 1.25Gbps and downlink speeds of up to 2.5Gbps. Its high bandwidth can easily meet the daily business and customer network needs of hotels.

The device allows centralized ONU management, with a single 16-port OLT managing over 2000 ONU connections. Additionally, the user-friendly web UI lets network administrators check vital data, alerts, and reports anytime, whether on-site or remotely via web management.

In addition, FS offers various levels of GPON OLT modules, such as Class B+, Class C+, and Class C++, allowing you to choose according to your needs to build an efficient and stable transmission network.

Multi-type ONUs

We've installed different types of Optical Network Units (ONUs) throughout the hotel to cater to various needs. In guest rooms, we've deployed HGU ONUs with WiFi 6 support. This ensures that guests can enjoy fast and stable wireless internet. In public areas, we use POE ONUs. These units provide both power and network connectivity to cameras, access points, and other infrastructure. This setup ensures reliable network and video services across the hotel.

Passive ODN (Optical Distribution Network)

FS has replaced costly copper wiring with a simpler, more efficient passive ODN network. By using a Fiber to the Room (FTTR) solution, we've reduced the number of cables and streamlined the wiring process. FS offers a variety of ODN products, including fiber distribution boxes and PLC splitters, to provide hotels with a smooth and effective wiring setup. Our PLC splitters come in different packages, making them easy to install in various environments.

Benefit of FS All-Optical POL Solution

Cost Reduction and Efficiency Enhancement

Compared to traditional setups with multiple cables in one room, the POL solution uses optical fibers instead of expensive copper cables. With a "one room, one fiber; one fiber, many services" approach, a single fiber can transports telephone, PC, IPTV and Wi-Fi, and more at the same time. This significantly cuts down on cabling and maintenance costs. The POL also uses a point-to-multipoint structure. This saves on trunk fiber, optical transceivers, and central office equipment, effectively reducing overall equipment costs.

Broad High-Bandwidth Network Coverage

We have achieved comprehensive high-bandwidth network coverage throughout the hotel through a combination of wired and wireless solutions. We have deployed various ONU devices tailored to the specific needs of different hotel areas to meet diverse service access requirements. This ensures that both staff and guests can enjoy high-quality gigabit network access around the clock, even in crowded situations, with high bandwidth, low latency, and stable, fast network services. This not only enhances user experience but also significantly improves the hotel's service quality and competitiveness.

Flexible Scalability and Long-Term Sustainability

PON network technology has great scalability thanks to its simple point-to-multipoint design. It allows easy upgrades to faster networks like XG(S)-PON and NG-PON, meeting future needs. You can easily add network nodes based on the hotel's business needs, accommodating future growth. Optical fibers last four times longer than traditional network cables, which means you'll need to replace them less often during upgrades. This also eliminates the need for rewiring in the future, supporting long-term sustainable development.

Secure and Reliable Network Environment

The network supports a range of security protocols, including 802.1x authentication and AES128 encryption, effectively ensuring the security of hotel information. Additionally, the OLT equipment provides security features such as ACL, RADIUS, TACACS+, and DHCP snooping, which collectively enhance network security, facilitate effective management, protect data integrity, and improve network reliability.
