What Is a Server Cluster?

A server cluster is a group of servers that collaborate under a shared IP address to enhance availability for users. These clustered servers are commonly employed for file, print, database, and messaging services. They are designed to minimize downtime and interruptions by enabling another server to take over if one fails.

Additionally, in a network server setup, multiple servers or clusters are connected to a primary system. When one of these servers encounters a service interruption, the workload is transferred to another server. Each server, known as a node, independently manages its own devices within the clustered server environment and maintains a copy of the operating system used by the other servers in the cluster. This setup enhances the reliability, consistency, and security of sensitive data.

Types of Server Clusters

There are three types of server clusters, each distinguished by how the cluster system (also known as a node) connects to the device storing configuration data:

Single (or Standard) Quorum Cluster

Also known as a Standard Quorum Cluster, this type consists of multiple nodes, each connected to one or more cluster disk arrays through a single bus connection. Each node manages and owns its respective disk arrays independently.

Majority Node Set Cluster

Unlike the Single Quorum Cluster, configuration data in this type is owned by each node and remains consistent across all nodes. This cluster does not require a shared storage bus because each node stores a local copy of the quorum. This setup provides flexibility in remote server architecture and is suitable for clusters with nodes located in diverse regions.

Single Node Cluster

This type consists of only one node and is typically used for testing purposes or for designing and researching cluster systems. Its utility is limited due to the lack of failover capabilities.

Before selecting among these server cluster types, consulting with a local data center or web hosting provider is recommended to determine the most suitable model for your company. Generally, the Standard Quorum Cluster is a conventional choice unless extensive requirements or geographically dispersed sites necessitate an alternative approach.
