Bandwidth intensive applications are further pushing the threshold on the need for higher performance, making 10G Ethernet a imperative for inter-switch and server-to-switch links. However, a glaring problem facing network managers is the high costs associated with 10G optical cabling, which has delayed widespread adoption of 10G Ethernet. Fortunately, 10GBase-T switch overcomes these cost barriers, ushering in an affordable migration to 10Gb copper switch throughout the data center. Recently, FS.com delivers a special offering on its 10GBase-T copper switch S5850-48T4Q—with up to $800 price reduction.

10GBase-T Switch: Maturing Technology for Broad Adoption

10GbE deployments using SFP+ connections have proven cost-prohibitive for most smaller business. 10GBase-T switch, with more attractive price reduction, provides a fancy alternative for rapid, large-scale adoption of 10GbE. 10 Gigabit Ethernet switch over copper cable addresses bottleneck issues and enables great ROI and performance—it is fully backwards compatible with 100/1000BASE-T, allowing for a smooth transition path for places where Cat5e was previously deployed. Additional benefits of 10GbE RJ45 switch include lower cost with much longer reach (compared with SFP+DAC), lower deployment cost and less cabling complexity than optical cabling, and ease of migration.

Highlights of FS S5850-48T4Q 10GBase-T Switch

FS S5850-48T4Q 10GBase-T switch offers wire speed layer 2/3 performance, meeting network requirements scaling from small business to enterprise. S5850-48T4Q 10Gb copper switch offers 48 auto-negotiating 100Mb/1000Mb/10GBASE-T ports with standard RJ45 interfaces and 4 uplink ports operating at 40Gbps. These QSFP+ interfaces can operate as either a 40Gbps port or as 4 10Gbps ports to provide a total of 64 10Gbps ports. S5850-40T4Q 10 Gigabit Ethernet switch are used as ToR switch or leaf switch to optimize deployment in standalone or top-of-rack environments. FS breaks industry price barrier with this affordable 10GBase-T switch for less than $80 per port, in sharp comparison to many 10GBase-T copper solutions which cost $400 per port or more.

Being the most affordable 10G solution spanning up to 100 meters, FS 10GBase-T switch also offers advanced features to support demanding data center environments, such as reduced power consumption, improved security sets and enhanced management, etc.

Low Power Consumption

One of the key problems with 10GBase-T devices in the early years has been their excessive power consumption compared to fiber-based products. FS 10GBase-T switch S5850-48T4Q are more power-frugal. With a typical power consumption of less than 7 watts/port, the 10Gb copper switch provides industry leading power efficiency for the data center. FS 10GBase-T copper switch has two pluggable redundant power supply and fans, the temperature and status of which are real-time monitored by the system. The fan supports intelligent speed control function that enables optimized airflow, targeting for deployment as ToR/EoR switch in server racks.

Configurable L2/L3 Networking Features

S5850-48T4Q 10GBase-T switch delivers wire speed switching at layer 2 and layer 3 to enable faster and simpler network designs for data centers. With features like MLAG, IPv4/IPv6, VXLAN, NVGRE, SNMP, MSTP etc, it fits equally in traditional or fully virtualized data centers. This 10GbE copper switch delivers MLAG feature enables the utilization of all interconnects in an active/active mode, delivering system level redundancy as well network level resiliency. MLAG feature allows one to interconnect two FS switches and use them as one logical switch for the purpose of L2 protocols such as STP or LACP.

Advanced Security Features

The S5850-48T4Q 10GBase-T switch is equipped with advanced security features such as Storm Control and IGMP Snooping. Storm Control monitors broadcast, multicast, or unknown unicast traffic and will start blocking or discarding packets which could flood the network when the defined threshold is exceeded. IGMP Snooping is able to reduce the loading of L3 multicast routers and save bandwidth in network throughput.

Easy Troubleshooting

S5850-48T4Q 10GBase-T switch features traffic classification, Loopback Detection and ACL filtering (Standard ACL and extend ACL). Loopback Detection helps network administrators find and solve network problems quickly and easily—it is used to detect loops created by a specific port and automatically shuts down the affected port. ACL filtering can realize the VM end-to-end monitoring and trouble-shooting under the overlay network environment.

S5850-48T4Q 10GBase-T Switch Deployment Scenario

Like aforementioned, FS 10GBase-T switch can be used as Top of Rack (ToR) and End-of-Row (EoR) or leaf switches in data center environment. Let’s see how this 10Gb copper switch fit for these cabling environments.

For ToR/EoR Architecture

In ToR architecture, the S5850-48T4Q 10GBase-T switch resides at the top of each server rack, provides the flexibility of connecting existing 1000Base-T or legacy switches and servers to newer 10GbE equipment using cat6a patch cords. EoR usually adopts standard structured cabling to provide efficient cable organization, allowing the user to take optimal advantage of 10GBase-T switch. And EoR networks with Base-T cabling has become the most common layout.

For Spine-Leaf Architecture

Acting as a leaf switch, 10GBASE-T switch S5850-48T4Q allows more flexibility in providing connectivity to 10GbE routers, servers, backbones in data center environment. Here, we use FS S8050-20Q4C switch as a spine switch, and 10Gbase-T switch S5850-48T4Q as leaf switch to demonstrate the topology.
