With the rapid acceleration of business cloudification, the number of servers in large-scale cloud data centers is continually growing, reaching tens of thousands. Data volumes exceed 1000PB, and the horizontal traffic between data centers is increasing exponentially. Consequently, constructing ultra-broadband, intelligent, and green energy-efficient data center interconnect (DCI) networks is becoming a trend.

3 Challenges in Building a DCI Network

Growing Network Capacity Needs

By 2025, it is estimated that 90% of business operations will be cloud-based, with data centers serving as the primary infrastructure to support this shift. As a result, data center sizes are rapidly increasing. The volume of traffic between data centers (east-west traffic) is expected to grow fourfold over five years, presenting substantial challenges in managing and transmitting this massive data efficiently.

Extended Transmission Distances and Low Latency Requirements

As data centers move from high-cost urban centers to more cost-effective remote locations, the distance between data centers and end-users has significantly increased. This geographical dispersion brings forth the challenge of maintaining efficient data transmission over longer distances while also meeting stringent low latency demands, which are critical for ensuring seamless user experiences.

Efficient Service Deployment Needs

In the era of cloud computing, rapid deployment of services has become a key expectation, with industry benchmarks measured in days or even minutes. This necessitates a level of agility and responsiveness in service delivery between data centers that poses a formidable challenge. Meeting these high expectations for swift and reliable service deployment requires overcoming significant operational hurdles.

4 Requirements for DCI Solution Design

Cost-effective and Stable Upgrade Solutions

With the rapid increase in data volumes, network upgrades from 10G to beyond 100G are imperative. Expanding data center capacity and bandwidth entails significant financial investments, given the high costs of equipment and materials, coupled with substantial ongoing maintenance expenses. Therefore, a solution that offers both cost-effectiveness and stability is crucial.

Centralized Management and Comprehensive Performance Monitoring

The complexity of managing a large-scale network, compounded by numerous devices and intricate systems, requires integrating and collecting data from multiple networks, sub-networks, and diverse sources. This complexity makes network management time-consuming and error-prone, leading to operational inefficiencies. Thus, a solution providing centralized management of devices, comprehensive performance monitoring, and real-time network data insights is essential.

Flexible Product Solutions for Diverse Application Scenarios

Different application scenarios necessitate the use of equipment from various vendors and technologies, making integration both complex and time-consuming. The design and manufacturing of multi-functional devices are costly and complicated to maintain. Consequently, a flexible product solution that can meet varying business requirements and adapt to diverse business changes is necessary.

Expert Technical Team and Timely After-Sales Support

Optical transmission network equipment is inherently complex, posing various technical challenges during solution design and implementation. Without professional team guidance and support, these challenges become more pronounced. An experienced technical support team, coupled with timely after-sales service, is required to help resolve technical issues encountered in network operations, ensuring smooth and efficient network performance.
